The definition of a college student-athlete, Pat graduated summa cum laude from ASU in 1997 with a degree in marketing (3.84 GPA). He was the 1997 Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Year for the Sun Devil’s football team, and was awarded a Pac-10 Medal of honor. In 2001, he captured the nation’s respect by walking away from a successful pro football career with the NFL Arizona Cardinals to enlist in the US Army and become an Army Ranger. Pat was killed during a combat mission in Afghanistan on April 22, 2004. His courage and valor were honored by posthumous awards of the Silver Star and Purple Heart medals.

The Tillman family and friends created the Pat Tillman Foundation, a 501(c) 3 tax-exempt organization, determined to carry Pat’s legacy forward by inspiring people to make positive changes in themselves and in the world around them. The Pat Tillman Foundation plans to accomplish its mission through its core initiative: the Leadership Through Action program. Partnered with the ASU W.P. Carey School of Business, the program’s goal is to develop the leaders of our future – inspiring and supporting them as they tackle real-world problems.
